Peadar Clancy (1888–1920) was an Irish republican who rose to prominence as a key figure in the fight for Irish independence. He served with distinction in the Four Courts garrison during the 1916 Easter Rising, where he single-handedly captured Lord Dunsany and Colonel Lindsay, earning a promotion to Lieutenant before being court-martialed and sentenced to death—a sentence later commuted to ten years' penal servitude. After his release in 1917, he helped reorganise the Volunteers and opened The Republican Outfitters on Talbot Street, a drapery shop that became a famous—and heavily watched—meeting place for the IRA. As second-in-command of the Dublin Brigade during the War of Independence, Clancy was arrested and shot dead by his guards in Dublin Castle on 21 November 1920, alongside Dick McKee and Conor Clune. This killing occurred on the eve of Bloody Sunday, a day that saw the IRA's assassination of British intelligence agents and the subsequent massacre of 14 civilians at Croke Park by the Royal Irish Constabulary, making Clancy a central martyr of one of the most violent days in the conflict.
