The LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association), headquartered in Daytona Beach, Florida, is the oldest continuing women's professional sports organization in the United States, incorporated in 1950. It was founded by 13 pioneering golfers—including Patty Berg (its first president), Babe Zaharias, and Louise Suggs—and its first tournament, the 1950 Tampa Women's Open, was notably won by amateur Polly Riley. Beyond running the elite LPGA Tour, the organization operates the developmental Epson Tour and acquired the amateur-focused Executive Women's Golf Association in 2018, while also representing club and teaching professionals. In a significant policy shift, the LPGA allowed transgender competitors in 2010, but in December 2024 it announced a new rule (effective 2025) restricting female competition to players assigned female at birth or those who transitioned before male puberty. With its annual qualifying school and global reach, the LPGA remains the most prestigious women's golf circuit, distinct from the PGA Tour in its combined focus on professional tours and professional education.
