On April 25, 2019, a catastrophic traffic collision occurred on Interstate 70 near Lakewood, Colorado, when a semi-trailer truck's brakes malfunctioned on a downhill stretch, causing the driver, Rogel Lazaro Aguilera Mederos, to lose control and crash into a line of stopped traffic. Speeding past a runaway truck ramp and reaching over 100 mph, Mederos plowed into 12 cars and three other semis, igniting a massive fire fueled by lumber, gasoline, and mattresses that killed four Colorado residents: Doyle Harrison, William Bailey, Stanley Politano, and Miguel Lamas Arellano. The crash was exacerbated by an earlier, unrelated bus accident that had created a severe traffic jam, leaving Mederos with nowhere to go. Mederos, a Cuban immigrant who survived uninjured, was later convicted of vehicular homicide and initially sentenced to 110 years in prison, a term that was controversially reduced to 10 years on appeal. The devastating incident prompted the Colorado Department of Transportation to consider adding an additional runaway truck ramp on that hazardous stretch of highway.
