The Sacramento Kings are a professional basketball team based in Sacramento, California, and hold the distinction of being the oldest franchise in the NBA, playing their home games at the Golden 1 Center. The franchise originated in 1923 as the Rochester Seagrams before turning professional as the Rochester Royals in 1945, winning the NBL championship in their first season and an NBA championship in 1951. Over the years, the team relocated multiple times, moving to Cincinnati in 1957 and then to Kansas City–Omaha in 1972, where they adopted the "Kings" nickname to avoid confusion with baseball's Royals, before finally settling in Sacramento in 1985. Their most successful era in California came during the early 2000s, highlighted by the 2001–02 season when they posted the NBA's best record at 61–21. However, the team then endured a historic slump, suffering 16 consecutive losing seasons (2006–2022) and the longest active playoff drought in major North American sports, which only ended in 2023. Consequently, due to their long history and periods of futility, the Kings currently hold the record for the most losses in NBA history.
