Callaway Golf Company is the world's largest manufacturer of golf clubs, headquartered in Carlsbad, California, and selling its equipment in over 70 countries. Founded in 1982 by former textile executive Ely Callaway Jr., the company gained fame in the early 1990s with the revolutionary Big Bertha driver, a larger 190cc steel clubhead designed by Richard C. Helmstetter that offered greater forgiveness to players. Over the years, Callaway expanded through strategic acquisitions, picking up the Odyssey putter brand in 1997 and the Top-Flite, Strata, and Ben Hogan brands in 2003 after Spalding's bankruptcy. In a major diversification move, the company purchased the entertainment driving-range chain Topgolf in 2021, but later sold a majority stake in it to private equity in 2025. Callaway's history also includes a notable $170 million investment in a state-of-the-art golf ball production facility, developed with engineers from Boeing and DuPont, which produced the innovative Rule 35 ball.
