Deportivo Cali is a renowned Colombian sports club based in Cali, famed for its football team that competes in the Categoría Primera A, and it stands as one of the nation's most successful with ten league titles, one Copa Colombia, and one Superliga. The club holds several unique distinctions: it is the only Colombian team to own its stadium, the 61,890-seat Estadio Deportivo Cali, and in 1978 it became the first Colombian club to reach the Copa Libertadores final. Founded in 1908 by the Lalinde brothers as Cali Football Club, the team was renamed Deportivo Cali in 1912 and dominated amateur National Games in the late 1920s before turning professional in 1948. In the 1949 season, under the leadership of sugar tycoon Carlos Sarmiento Lora and the famed Peruvian-stacked "Rodillo Negro" attack, the club went on an 18-match unbeaten streak, eventually finishing as runners-up after a tiebreaker against Millonarios. In 2016, Forbes ranked Deportivo Cali as the 36th most valuable football club in the Americas, and between 2024 and 2025 it transitioned from a fan-owned entity into a public limited company, with Guatemalan investment group IDC Network acquiring an 85% stake. This historic ownership shift marks a new chapter for the club, which had been the last fan-owned football institution in Colombia.
