The Abbey Gate (Klosterporten) in Sorø, Denmark, is a historic gatehouse dating from around 1200 that once guarded the entrance to Absalon's Sorø Abbey and now provides access to the grounds of Sorø Academy. Built in two stages during the 1160s and around 1200, the gate originally featured a cross-shaped layout and massive oak doors, and it strictly controlled entry—barring women and most outsiders from the abbey grounds. The building was significantly altered by architect Johan Daniel Herholdt in 1883, and its western extension, known as "Saxo's Cell" (after the historian Saxo Grammaticus), features a central stone column supporting four groin vaults. Today, the gatehouse serves as a residence for a teacher at Sorø Academy, making it the oldest continuously inhabited building in Denmark. Over the centuries, it has also functioned as a coal storage facility, a jailhouse, and an exhibition space, and it stands near the abbey church, which is Denmark's longest church building.
