Austin FC is a professional soccer club based in Austin, Texas, that competes in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Western Conference. Founded in 2018 and beginning play in the 2021 season at their home stadium, Q2 Stadium, they made history as the first major professional sports league team in the Texas capital—previously the largest U.S. city without one. The club's origin is unique: it was initially planned as a relocation of the Columbus Crew, but after that team was saved by new owners, Austin FC became an expansion team instead. The club's identity features a signature "Bright Verde" color and an oak tree crest designed by local studio The Butler Bros, symbolizing the bond between club and city. In their inaugural season, they hired Josh Wolff as head coach and Claudio Reyna as sporting director, with Alexander Ring named the first captain. After losing their opening match to LAFC, they secured their first victory against the Colorado Rapids (3–1) and their first home win against the Portland Timbers (4–1), quickly establishing a competitive presence in the league.
