A hospital is a healthcare institution providing specialized medical treatment, with the general hospital being the most common type—equipped with an emergency department to handle urgent issues like accidents or sudden illnesses. These facilities range from specialized centers (such as trauma, psychiatric, or children's hospitals) to teaching hospitals, which combine patient care with the training of medical students and residents, while smaller facilities are known as clinics. Historically, hospitals were funded and staffed by religious orders or charitable volunteers, but today they are supported by public funding, insurance, and non-profits, and are staffed by professional physicians, surgeons, and allied health workers. Interestingly, the word hospital derives from the Latin hospes (meaning "guest" or "stranger"), which also gave us hospitality, hostel, and hotel—reflecting its original role as a "place of hospitality." Modern large hospitals often serve as administrative hubs for broader health systems, and some historic institutions, like the Royal Hospital Chelsea (founded in 1681), still preserve that original meaning as a retirement home for veterans.
