Jeremy Peña is a Dominican-born shortstop for the Houston Astros, who moved to Rhode Island as a child and played college baseball at the University of Maine before being drafted in the third round of the 2018 MLB draft. After making his MLB debut in 2022, he delivered a historic rookie season, becoming the first rookie shortstop to win a Gold Glove Award and the first to hit a home run in the World Series. During the Astros' championship run that year, Peña was named MVP of both the ALCS and the World Series, making him the first American League player to win both awards in the same season and the youngest position player ever to claim the World Series MVP. Taking over for the departed Carlos Correa, he earned his first All-Star selection in 2025. His journey to stardom included overcoming a canceled 2020 minor league season and a wrist injury in 2021, but he has since become a key defensive and offensive force for Houston.
