The Daily Mail, a conservative British middle-market tabloid founded in 1896 by Alfred and Harold Harmsworth, is published in London and owned by the Daily Mail and General Trust, chaired by Jonathan Harmsworth. With a circulation of 1.13 million in February 2020, its readership is notably older (average age 58) and uniquely female-majority (52–55%), while its website, MailOnline, attracts over 218 million monthly visitors. The paper has won the National Newspaper of the Year award nine times since 1994, but it has also faced significant criticism for sensationalism, inaccurate science stories, and plagiarism, leading English Wikipedia to ban it as a reliable source in February 2017. After an immediate success at its launch—selling over a million copies by 1902, making it the world's largest—it switched from broadsheet to compact format in 1971. Its current editor is Ted Verity, who took over in November 2021, overseeing the paper alongside its sister publication, The Mail on Sunday.
