Mason Miller, nicknamed "the Reaper", is a flamethrowing pitcher who currently plays for the San Diego Padres but made his name with the Oakland Athletics, debuting in 2023 and earning All-Star selections in 2024 and 2026. Drafted in the third round in 2021 out of Gardner-Webb (after playing at Waynesburg, where he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes), he burst onto the scene in April 2023 by becoming just the 10th starter since Statcast to throw 15 pitches over 100 mph, though a UCL sprain soon forced a permanent move to the bullpen. In his breakout 2024 rookie season, he became a dominant closer, earning All-Star honors, throwing the fastest pitch in All-Star Game history (103.6 mph), and setting a franchise rookie record with 28 saves. He also made history on September 26, 2024, by throwing the final pitch at the Oakland Coliseum, closing out the A's last win in Oakland with a 103.8 mph fastball. Finishing 2024 with a 2.49 ERA and 104 strikeouts, he was named to the All-MLB Second Team and finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting, before recording the A's first save in Sacramento in April 2025.
