The Brooklyn Democratic Party (officially the Kings County Democratic County Committee) is one of the largest Democratic county organizations in the United States, serving as the most local level of party governance in New York City. Its structure includes a massive county committee with roughly 10,000 seats, though nearly half are typically left unfilled, while real power is concentrated in a 42-member executive committee led by a chair colloquially known as the "Brooklyn Boss." The party wields significant influence over local candidate selection, including judicial nominations, which critics argue gives it near-virtual control over judge selection in heavily Democratic Brooklyn. A 2005 study highlighted the organization's lack of democratic participation, finding that over 50% of county committee seats were vacant and 98% of elections were uncontested. In 2016, the reform campaign #RepYourBlock, led by the New Kings Democrats, encouraged progressive citizens to run for committee seats, but a subsequent attempt to pass ethics and transparency amendments was blocked by party leadership in September of that year.
