Interstate 278 (I-278) is a 35.62-mile auxiliary highway running from Linden, New Jersey, to the Bruckner Interchange in the Bronx, uniquely passing through all five boroughs of New York City. It incorporates several major freeways, including the Staten Island Expressway, Gowanus Expressway, and Brooklyn–Queens Expressway, and crosses iconic bridges like the Goethals, Verrazzano–Narrows, Kosciuszko, and Robert F. Kennedy. Built in pieces from the 1930s through the 1960s, its construction was largely planned by Robert Moses and sparked controversy for tearing through urban neighborhoods. Despite its number, I-278 never connects to its parent I-78, as planned extensions were canceled due to community opposition, though the New Jersey segment opened in 1969. Additionally, parts of the route were once designated as I-87 or I-895 before the current numbering was finalized by 1970.
