Gianni Infantino (born 23 March 1970 in Brig, Switzerland, to Italian parents) is a Swiss football administrator who became FIFA's president in February 2016, making him the first Italian to hold the role. Before FIFA, he served as UEFA's Secretary General from 2009 to 2016, where he introduced Financial Fair Play, expanded Euro 2016 to 24 teams, and helped conceive the UEFA Nations League and Euro 2020. As FIFA president, he has overseen the 2018, 2022, and 2026 World Cups, relaunched the Club World Cup with 32 clubs, and introduced the FIFA Series, while also becoming an IOC member in 2020. However, his tenure has been marked by controversy, including ethics probes, criminal proceedings in Switzerland over undisclosed meetings with Attorney General Michael Lauber, and his dismissal of FIFA's independent ethics chairmen in 2017. He also drew criticism for his 2018 comments against the US travel ban, insisting that qualifying teams and their supporters must have access to World Cup competitions.
