Climate change denial is a form of science denial that rejects the overwhelming scientific consensus on human-caused global warming, often using rhetorical tactics to create a false impression of scientific controversy where none exists. This denialism is heavily promoted by industrial and political interests, including the fossil fuels lobby, the Koch brothers, and ultraconservative think tanks, with more than 90% of skeptical papers originating from right-wing sources. While oil companies published research agreeing with climate science in the 1970s, they later organized a widespread disinformation campaign—a strategy directly compared to the tobacco industry's denial of smoking hazards. The terminology is debated, as deniers often call themselves "skeptics," but this misuses the term since scientific skepticism is a core part of the scientific method, whereas "denial" has become the established descriptive term in academic literature. Ultimately, this denialism undermines global efforts to act on or adapt to climate change and exerts a powerful influence on climate politics, with scientists, especially in the U.S., reporting pressure to censor their work.
