The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), officially the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, is Africa's premier men's international football competition, sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). First held in 1957 with only three participating nations—Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia—after South Africa was disqualified due to apartheid, it has since expanded dramatically to feature 24 teams since the 2019 edition.
The tournament, historically biennial, shifted to odd-numbered years from 2013 to avoid conflicts with the FIFA World Cup and is projected to become a quadrennial event in leap years from 2028. Egypt is the most successful nation, holding a record seven titles, including an unprecedented three consecutive victories between 2006 and 2010. A total of fifteen countries have won the cup throughout its history, with Cameroon (five titles) and Ghana (four titles) also notable winners. Ivory Coast are the current champions, having defeated Nigeria in the 2023 final.
