Psychiatrist (game)

Psychiatrist (also known as Psycho) is a party game where one player acts as a doctor who must diagnose a group of "patients" all secretly sharing a specific affliction, such as a fear of the dark or a delusion of being a film star. After the patients agree on their ailment while the doctor is out of the room, the psychiatrist returns and asks indirect questions to deduce the shared problem, with patients offering hints through their answers and behavior. If a patient gives an answer inconsistent with the agreed-upon affliction, another player shouts "Psychiatrist!" and the offender swaps seats with the first person to yell. A popular college variant—resembling the games I Never and Mao—replaces the affliction with a hidden pattern, such as "answer for the person to your right," leading to increasingly personal and risqué questions as players reveal intimate details about one another. In this version, incorrect answers trigger the same "Psychiatrist!" shout and a mass seat-switching, with the true goal being to discover how much players actually know about each other. For experienced players, patterns can become highly esoteric, such as "the first person to your left who is a different gender but shares your hair color," and a novice psychiatrist might not even be told a pattern exists, forcing them to deduce the rules as well as the secret.
