Citibank (officially Citibank, N.A.) is the primary U.S. banking subsidiary of the financial giant Citigroup, tracing its roots back to its founding as the City Bank of New York in 1812. Over the 19th century, it financed war bonds for the War of 1812 and the Civil War, joined the national banking system in 1865, and by 1895 had become the largest bank in the United States. It later helped finance the Panama Canal (1904) and opened the first overseas branch of a U.S. national bank in Buenos Aires in 1914. Today, Citibank operates in 19 countries, with U.S. branches concentrated in six major metro areas (New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C., and Miami), and as of 2023 it ranks as the third-largest U.S. bank by assets. Its history also includes a notable 1831 bank heist and a controversial role in Haiti, where it lobbied for the U.S. occupation and imposed a $30 million loan on the Haitian government in the 1910s.
