Enes Kanter Freedom (born May 20, 1992) is a former NBA center who played 11 seasons, beginning when he was drafted third overall by the Utah Jazz in 2011. Born in Switzerland and raised in Turkey, he is best known for his human rights activism, particularly his outspoken criticism of China's treatment of Uyghurs and forced labor, which he publicized through his signature "freedom shoes." His path to the NBA was unusual: after moving to the US as a teenager, he signed with Kentucky, but the NCAA ruled him permanently ineligible because he had received about $33,000 in excess benefits from the Turkish club Fenerbahçe. He then entered the 2011 NBA draft directly, having previously played professionally in Turkey and high school basketball in California. Beyond China, he has also criticized human rights abuses in Turkey, Russia, Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela, and he legally added "Freedom" to his name to reflect his advocacy.
