The USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier commissioned on 11 November 1989, serves as the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 3 in the U.S. Pacific Fleet. One of its most famous missions was leading a 23-ship armada during Operation Fiery Vigil in 1991, executing the largest peacetime evacuation in history by rescuing over 45,000 people from Subic Bay following the eruption of Mount Pinatubo. The carrier also played critical combat roles in Operation Desert Storm and later provided air support over Mogadishu during Operation Restore Hope in 1993. Notably, it was the first Pacific Fleet carrier to integrate female aviators into its crew, a milestone overshadowed by the tragic 1994 crash death of Lieutenant Kara Spears Hultgreen, the first female F-14 pilot. Its remarkable history includes a unique human touch, as a baby born aboard during the Philippine evacuation was aptly named Abraham Lincoln Prestera, commemorating the ship's role in a historic rescue.
