Apple TV is a line of digital media players from Apple that streams content from online services, local networks, and its own storage, running on the tvOS operating system since 2015 (derived from iOS) and also serving as a smart home hub. The first model, announced in 2006 and shipped in 2007, was originally called "iTV" but was renamed due to a trademark dispute with the British network ITV; it initially required syncing with a computer via iTunes, but a "Take 2" software update in 2008 made it a standalone device accessing content directly from the internet. The second generation in 2010 switched to Apple's A-series chips and an iOS-based system, while the fourth generation in 2015 introduced the tvOS name, a full app store, and Siri integration. Before this success, Apple had several failed ventures in the TV space, including the Macintosh TV (1993, only 10,000 sold), the unreleased Apple Interactive Television Box (1994), and the Apple Pippin console (1995, around 42,000 units). The first-generation Apple TV ran Mac OS X on an Intel Pentium processor, offered 720p output, and could even be modified by enthusiasts into a makeshift Mac mini, making it an intriguing piece of tech history.
