Automatic summarization is a computational process employing Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to condense various data types, including text, images, and videos, into a shorter summary that captures the most important information. There are two primary approaches: extraction-based summarization, which directly selects and presents key content from the original source without modification, and the more complex abstractive-based summarization, which generates entirely new text by understanding and paraphrasing the original content, akin to human summarization. While abstractive methods are computationally challenging and predominantly used for text, extractive techniques are more common for visual media like images and videos. This valuable technology is becoming increasingly accessible, as evidenced by Google Docs' introduction of an automatic summarization feature in 2022, and its quality can be further improved by combining software with human oversight.
