After starting in Germany with Hamburger SV (2010) and Bayer Leverkusen (2013), he joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2015, where he won the FIFA Puskás Award (2019-20) and the Premier League Golden Boot (2021-22) as the first Asian winner, before leading Spurs to a UEFA Europa League title in 2025—ending their 17-year trophy drought.
