Tanner Rainey

  • Tanner Rainey (born December 25, 1992) is a professional pitcher currently with the Detroit Tigers, having previously played for the Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals, and Pittsburgh Pirates.
  • Drafted by the Reds in the second round of the 2015 MLB draft, he made his major league debut in 2018 but had a rough rookie season (24.23 ERA) before being traded to the Nationals in December 2018 for Tanner Roark.
  • With Washington, he became a key reliever, helping the team win the 2019 World Series and posting a strong 2.66 ERA in 2020 before forearm tightness cut his season short.
  • After returning from Tommy John surgery in 2023, he pitched for the Nationals in 2024, but was non-tendered, signed a minor league deal with the Pirates in December 2024, and struggled (10.57 ERA) before joining Detroit.
  • Known for his high strikeout rates but also high walk numbers, Rainey's career has been a mix of playoff glory, a championship ring, and recurring injury battles.
