Portland Timbers

The Portland Timbers are a professional soccer club in Major League Soccer (MLS) based in Portland, Oregon, playing their home matches at Providence Park since their 2011 expansion season. As a phoenix club, the franchise carries on the legacy of the original Portland Timbers from the North American Soccer League (NASL) era (1975–1982), with owner Merritt Paulson securing the MLS berth in 2009. The Timbers have won several major honors, including the Western Conference title in 2013, and their first MLS Cup in 2015, making them the first Cascadia-based club to lift the trophy. They returned to the MLS Cup final in 2018 and 2021 (losing to Atlanta United FC and New York City FC, respectively), and also won the one-off MLS is Back Tournament in 2020. The club maintains fierce rivalries with the Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps, competing annually for the Cascadia Cup, with their enduring culture rooted in the city's love for soccer sparked by the NASL Timbers' championship run in 1975.
