Orenthal James "O.J." Simpson (1947–2024), known as "the Juice," was a prominent American professional football player, actor, and media personality whose incredible athletic success was eventually eclipsed by legal controversies. Regarded as one of the greatest running backs, Simpson won the Heisman Trophy and became the first NFL player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season with the Buffalo Bills, earning MVP honors and induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. However, his life took a dramatic turn with the internationally publicized 1994 criminal trial for the murders of his former wife Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman, which culminated in a controversial acquittal in October 1995 amid heightened racial tensions. Though later found civilly liable for the deaths, he paid little of the substantial judgment. In 2008, Simpson was convicted of armed robbery and kidnapping, serving nine years in prison before his parole in 2017.
