Newt Gingrich (born June 17, 1943, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) served as the 50th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999, representing Georgia's 6th district. As a co-architect of the Contract with America, he spearheaded the 1994 Republican Revolution that ended four decades of Democratic control, earning Time magazine's "Man of the Year" in 1995. His tenure as Speaker saw the passage of welfare reform (1996) and capital gains tax cuts, but was also marked by government shutdowns and the party-line impeachment of President Bill Clinton, followed by an ethics reprimand that led to his resignation in January 1999. After leaving Congress, he founded policy think tanks and ran unsuccessfully for president in 2012, winning the South Carolina primary but dropping out later that year. More recently, he became a key ally of Donald Trump, promoting claims of voter fraud and a "stolen" 2020 election. His unconventional path began as a history professor, and he was adopted by his stepfather, Robert Gingrich, growing up on military bases.
