Lanterns is an American superhero series created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King for HBO, starring Kyle Chandler as veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as new recruit John Stewart. The duo investigates a murder in Nebraska that leads them into a deeper cosmic mystery, with the show drawing inspiration from the gritty detective style of True Detective and Slow Horses. Originally developed by Greg Berlanti in 2019, the project was reimagined after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, and it was officially ordered by HBO in mid-2024. Filming took place in Los Angeles from February to July 2025, under directors including James Hawes, before its premiere on August 16, 2026. The eight-episode first season, part of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, explores Hal's mentorship of Stewart, who is uniquely the first Lantern recruited directly by the Guardians rather than a power ring.
