Alexander John Derby (born September 20, 1991) had a uniquely winding football career, transitioning from a college quarterback to an NFL tight end. After starting at Iowa and Coffeyville Community College, he transferred to Arkansas, where he converted to tight end in his senior year, recording 22 catches for 303 yards and three touchdowns. Despite a knee injury limiting him at the NFL Scouting Combine, the New England Patriots drafted him in the sixth round (202nd overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft, though a subsequent injury placed him on injured reserve for his rookie season. He made his professional debut in 2016, but was traded to the Denver Broncos in October of that year for a fifth-round pick. With Denver, he earned his first career start in November 2016 and caught two passes against the Saints, showcasing his versatility even as injuries plagued his tenure. While his pro career was brief, his journey from quarterback to tight end remains one of the more unconventional paths in recent NFL history.
