Wormleighton is a historic village in Warwickshire, England, situated on Wormleighton Hill with a population of 183 recorded in 2011. It boasts St Peter's Church, featuring a Norman tower and a notable 1610 tomb for Robert Spencer that uniquely displays both Julian and Gregorian death dates, alongside the substantial remains of the 16th-century Wormleighton Manor and its 1613 Jacobean gatehouse.
However, as a Royalist stronghold, the manor was slighted by Parliamentarians and burned down in 1645 during the English Civil War, causing the village's abandonment until its 19th-century refounding with new Arts and Crafts-style buildings. The powerful Spencer family, who built their fortune on sheep-rearing and purchased Althorp in 1508, were associated with the manor, but notoriously evicted 60 villagers in 1498 to expand their pastures, leading to significant local hardship.
