Ethel Caterham

Ethel May Caterham (née Collins, born 21 August 1909) is an English supercentenarian who, at 117 years old, became the world's oldest verified living person on 30 April 2025, following the death of Inah Canabarro Lucas, and is also the oldest British person ever recorded and the last surviving subject of King Edward VII. Born in Hampshire, she worked as an au pair in British India in her youth before marrying Norman Caterham at Salisbury Cathedral in 1933, and she famously continued driving until the age of 97. A remarkable figure, she contracted and recovered from COVID-19 at 110, met King Charles III in September 2025, and attributes her longevity to "taking everything in my stride." Her record-breaking journey saw her become the UK's oldest living person in 2022, Europe's oldest in 2024, and she surpassed Charlotte Hughes in April 2025 to become the oldest Brit ever. She was the first British person to reach 116 in August 2025 and celebrated her 117th birthday in August 2026, receiving congratulatory messages from the world's oldest man, João Marinho Neto.
