Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy (January 7, 1966 – July 16, 1999) was an American fashion publicist who rose to become director of show production at Calvin Klein before her highly publicized 1996 secret marriage to John F. Kennedy Jr.. The couple's private wedding on Cumberland Island, Georgia, and their subsequent life in New York thrust her into intense press scrutiny, turning her restrained, minimalist wardrobe into a defining fashion influence of the 1990s. On July 16, 1999, she died tragically alongside her husband and her older sister Lauren Bessette when the small plane JFK Jr. was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.
