Nathan Cofnas is an American philosopher whose career has been marked by repeated controversies over his advocacy of scientific racism. After earning his doctorate from Oxford in 2020 and securing a Cambridge fellowship in 2022, he was dismissed from Emmanuel College in 2024 following a blog post claiming that Black people are, on average, less intelligent than other groups. He moved to Ghent University in 2026, where the institution initially defended his appointment on academic freedom grounds despite student protests, but he was ultimately suspended on August 20, 2026, after posting a blog about alleged plagiarism by Cambridge sociologist Jason Arday, who was later found dead. Earlier in his career, his 2019 paper on race and intelligence in Philosophical Psychology drew harsh criticism from nine academics and prompted the journal's editor to resign. Having also withdrawn a 2012 book published by a race-and-intelligence think tank, Cofnas's trajectory reflects a pattern of provocative work that has repeatedly clashed with academic standards and institutional policies.
