New Edition, an influential American R&B/pop group, was formed in 1978 by Bobby Brown in Boston, quickly becoming the blueprint for modern boy bands in the 1980s. Their 1983 debut album, Candy Girl, launched them to stardom with hit singles like the title track, which hit number one on both US R&B and UK charts. The original lineup featured Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant (mostly lead singer), Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe, but Brown departed in 1985 for a solo career, and Johnny Gill joined in 1987.
In the early 1990s, members pursued successful solo careers and formed the popular trio Bell Biv DeVoe. All six members have frequently reunited since a major comeback in 1996 for the Home Again album. Cementing their legendary status, New Edition received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017, inspired a BET docuseries the same year, and was inducted into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2023.
