Cyrene primarily refers to a significant ancient Greek colony in North Africa, located in modern-day Libya, which historically became the capital of the Roman province of Crete and Cyrenaica. This prominent city also lent its name to the Cyrenaics, an ancient Greek school of philosophy, and is associated with an ancient Greek mythological figure. Beyond its historical roots, "Cyrene" has been adopted for two modern communities in the United States. The name also designated several ships, notably a Royal Navy frigate sold in 1828 and a 1944 United States Navy motor torpedo boat tender. Furthermore, "Cyrene" identifies an asteroid (133 Cyrene), a chemical compound, and appears as fictional characters and settings in popular culture, such as the television series Xena: Warrior Princess and the video game Honkai: Star Rail.
