The Weather Channel (TWC) launched on May 2, 1982, co-founded by meteorologist John Coleman and media executive Frank Batten, and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Originally owned by Landmark Communications, it passed to NBC Universal, Bain Capital, and Blackstone in 2008, and currently operates under Weather Group, LLC, while in August 2023, IBM announced it was selling its weather assets to Francisco Partners. Its reach has declined sharply, falling from 101 million U.S. households in 2013 to just 68 million by November 2023, as smartphones and online sources have displaced the cable channel for most viewers. A significant casualty of this shift was its sister network, Weatherscan, an automated 24/7 local forecast service that was officially shut down on December 12, 2022. The channel also provides outsourced weathercasts for CBS News and RFD-TV, and its history includes major staffing changes, such as the 2010 departure of its last original on-air meteorologist, Bill Keneely. Despite declining cable viewership, TWC remains a widely recognized name in weather media, adapting to the digital era.
