Nestor Cortes

Nestor Cortes Jr., nicknamed "Nasty Nestor," is a Cuban-American pitcher currently playing for the Philadelphia Phillies, having previously suited up for the Orioles, Yankees, Mariners, Brewers, and Padres. Born on December 10, 1994, in Cuba, he moved to Hialeah, Florida at seven months old after his father won the visa lottery, despite his father having spent a year in prison for a failed defection attempt in 1992. Drafted by the Yankees in the 36th round of the 2013 draft, Cortes was taken by the Orioles in the 2017 Rule 5 draft and made his MLB debut in 2018 before rejoining the Yankees, where he eventually became a reliable starter and earned an MLB All-Star selection in 2022. He is famously remembered for giving up a 10th-inning walk-off grand slam in Game 1 of the 2024 World Series. After that season, he was traded to the Brewers, then to the Padres in July 2025 after an injury, and signed with the Phillies in August 2026. Throughout his career, he honed a cut fastball while playing in the Dominican winter league, which proved to be a key weapon in his rise from a low-round draft pick to a solid major-league rotation.
