Atalanta is a prominent heroine in Greek mythology, known in two main versions—one Arcadian and one Boeotian—both portraying her as a formidable huntress closely allied with the goddess Artemis. Abandoned at birth on Mount Parthenion and nursed by a she-bear, she grew into a swift-footed virgin who eschewed men and famously slew the centaurs Rhoecus and Hylaios.
Her exceptional skills led her to sail as the only woman among the Argonauts and, most notably, to be a crucial participant in the dangerous Calydonian Boar Hunt. During this hunt, Atalanta was the first to wound the monstrous boar, a feat that earned her its hide from Meleager. However, this honor tragically sparked a fatal conflict when Meleager's jealous uncles contested her prize, ultimately leading to his own death. Renowned for her incredible speed and unwavering independence, Atalanta remains an iconic figure of female strength and defiance in ancient Greek lore.
