Tornado outbreak of April 25–28, 2024

During April 25–28, 2024, a devastating tornado outbreak struck the Midwestern, Southern, and High Plains regions of the U.S., with the most violent activity occurring on April 26 and 27. On April 26, a long-tracked EF4 tornado tore through Elkhorn, Bennington, and Blair near Lincoln, Nebraska, while a separate EF3 hit Omaha and Council Bluffs, and another EF3 killed one person in Minden, Iowa. The next day, April 27, Oklahoma was placed under a PDS tornado watch as catastrophic storms unfolded—a high-end EF3 ravaged Sulphur (killing one and injuring 30), an EF3 near Holdenville killed two, and an EF4 tornado killed a person along I-35 in Marietta. The outbreak tapered off on April 28 with a fatal EF1 tornado near Trinity, Texas, bringing the final toll to 164 tornadoes, 6 deaths, and 150 injuries. This event became the largest outbreak since the prior year, and it marked the beginning of a 16-day stretch of relentless severe weather that continued until May 10.
