Mark Rutte (born 1967) is a prominent Dutch politician who took office as the 14th Secretary General of NATO in October 2024. He notably served as Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 2010 to 2024, becoming the longest-serving premier in Dutch history with a tenure of almost 14 years. Leading the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), Rutte was often referred to as 'Teflon Mark' due to his pragmatic and resilient leadership, which allowed him to remain in power despite numerous political challenges and scandals, including two government resignations. After his final cabinet resigned in July 2023 over migration issues, and a period as caretaker, Rutte concluded his extensive national career to transition into his significant international role at NATO.
