The Merindad de Uribe, also known as Uribealdea, was a significant historical subdivision of Biscay in the Basque Country, Spain, forming much of what is now the greater metropolitan area of Bilbao. This traditional territory encompassed the main city of Bilbao, along with numerous present-day municipalities including Erandio, Leioa, Getxo, Basauri, Galdakao, and even Barakaldo. While its heart lies within modern Greater Bilbao, other historical Uribe areas are now organized into separate comarcas, such as Mungialdea (Uribe-Butroe) along the coast and parts of Arratia-Nerbioi further south. Interestingly, "Uribe" is also a common Basque surname, with a notable presence in Colombia, Mexico, and Ecuador, despite its etymological meaning ("under the city/town") being somewhat unclear.
