Brantingham Lake is a private, 327-acre lake nestled in New York's Adirondack Park, offering year-round recreation but strictly limited public access—there is no public beach, boat launch, or parking, so the lake is privately stocked by property owners. Historically, the Oneida Indians ceded the land in 1788, and in 1794 it was sold to Thomas Hopper Brantingham, who defaulted on his debts; the town was later renamed Greig after new owner John Greig, though the lake kept the Brantingham name. The lake features 11 miles of shoreline, a maximum depth of 70 feet, two islands (Grant and Dark), and a shallow "Lily Pond" inlet crossed by two bridges, with a concrete dam that lowers water levels in winter to prevent erosion. Because the area receives about 150 inches of snow annually, it has become a popular winter destination for snowmobilers and outdoor enthusiasts. The Adirondack Park's conservation efforts have also preserved the tradition of rustic "camps" along the shore, many of which have been passed down as cherished family heirlooms since the early 1900s.
