Diwali: The Festival of Lights
Diwali, also known as Dipavali, is the vibrant Hindu festival of lights, celebrated over five to six days between mid-September and mid-November, symbolizing the spiritual victory of good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. It commemorates significant events like Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya and is widely associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and Ganesha, the god of wisdom, with variations also observed by Jains and Sikhs. During this festive period, homes are illuminated with traditional oil lamps (diyas), candles, and lanterns, accompanied by fireworks, intricate rangoli designs, and lavish family feasts featuring sweets. This annual homecoming event fosters strong family and community bonds, involving gatherings, parades, and the exchange of greeting cards. Recognizing its profound cultural importance, the main day of Diwali is an official public holiday in over a dozen countries globally.
