The 2022–2023 United States Pseudomonas aeruginosa outbreak was traced back to contaminated artificial tears manufactured by EzriCare and Delsam Pharma, which were produced at a deficient plant in Tamil Nadu, India. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) became aware of the issue in January 2023 and advised the public to stop using the eye drops in February 2023, prompting a recall. The culprit was a rare, drug-resistant strain called VIM-GES-CRPA, which had never been seen in the U.S. before and could spread person-to-person, as observed in a Connecticut care facility. Symptoms range from eye pain, redness, and blurry vision to more serious respiratory or urinary infections. By May 19, 2023, the outbreak had grown to 81 cases across 18 states, leading to four deaths, vision loss in 14 people, and the surgical removal of an eye (enucleation) in four patients.
