Aisha Wahab

Aisha Wahab (born January 11, 1987) is a Democratic politician who has served in the California State Senate since 2022, making history as the first Muslim and Afghan American elected to that chamber. The daughter of Afghan refugees who fled the Soviet-Afghan War, she was born in New York City, orphaned at a young age, and adopted by an Afghan couple in Fremont, California, where she later earned a doctorate in social work from USC. Her political career began on the Hayward City Council (2018–2022), where she became one of the first Afghan Americans elected to public office in the United States. Now serving as Assistant Majority Leader, Wahab is running for Congress in California's 14th district, facing a special election runoff against Melissa Hernandez on August 18 after Eric Swalwell resigned amid misconduct allegations. Her progressive stances, such as support for Medicare for All, have drawn comparisons to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and she has championed policies aimed at economic and social justice.
