Bangladesh is making significant strides in its renewable energy sector, currently boasting an installed capacity of 1374.68 MW from diverse sources like hydro, solar, wind, and biomass-derived biogas. The Karnafuli Hydroelectric Power Station, inaugurated in 1962, remains a cornerstone, providing nearly 59% of the country's renewable energy share. Solar power is rapidly expanding, reaching 459 MW from 10 plants by 2024, with the Teesta 200MW Solar Park (launched in 2023) being the largest, and holds immense potential to meet 80% of the nation's projected energy demand by 2041.
A standout success is the Solar Home Systems (SHS) program, which has provided electricity to millions of off-grid rural households, reaching 3 million by late 2014 and recognized by the World Bank as the "fastest growing" globally. Further diversifying its portfolio, Bangladesh launched its first commercial wind power plant, a 60 MW facility in Cox's Bazar, in March 2024. These efforts highlight Bangladesh's commitment to harnessing its vast renewable potential for energy security and universal electricity access.
