A progressive, he advocates for Medicare for All, abolishing ICE, and ending U.S. military funding to Israel, and he previously ran for governor in 2018, finishing second to Gretchen Whitmer in the primary. His public health career includes serving as executive director of the Detroit Health Department (2015–2017) and as director of Wayne County's Health, Human, and Veterans Services (2023–2025). Educated at the University of Michigan, he became a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford and earned an M.D. from Columbia University, authoring three books on public health and reform. Born to Egyptian immigrant parents in Rochester Hills, Michigan, he was famously encouraged to enter public service by Bill Clinton after delivering a commencement speech, and he now stands as a prominent progressive voice in national politics.
