HM Prison Frankland is a high-security Category A men's prison in County Durham, England, notoriously nicknamed "Monster Mansion" for housing a large number of murderers, rapists, and terrorists. Opened in 1983, it has expanded over the decades, adding new wings and a specialist Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorder (DSPD) unit in 2004. The prison has seen extreme violence, including a 2011 incident where inmates Nathan Mann and Michael Parr disemboweled a fellow prisoner to eat his liver, and a 2025 attack by Hashem Abedi, brother of the Manchester Arena bomber, who used hot oil and homemade weapons on officers. In February 2026, convicted child killer Ian Huntley was fatally attacked with a spiked metal pole, dying after life support was withdrawn.
