The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and advocating for the public transportation industry across the United States. Representing approximately 1,500 public and private sector members, including major systems like the New York MTA, APTA encompasses all transit modes, from buses and subways to high-speed rail, and accounts for over 90% of U.S. public transit riders. Led by President and CEO Paul Skoutelas since January 2018, a core function of APTA is to advocate for increased federal funding and supportive legislative policies.

A significant achievement was its pivotal role in the 2015 passage of the FAST Act, which secured predictable multi-year funding for public transportation, aiming to invest in infrastructure, create jobs, and reduce congestion. Since 1943, APTA has also published its annual Public Transportation Fact Book, offering essential industry data. The association collaborates with partners to develop practical solutions for mobility challenges, working towards safe, efficient transportation that connects people to vital opportunities.
